Why are there more women than men in meditation courses?

Stefanie asked:
I’ve noticed that in meditation retreats and courses eg. vipassana in western countries there are almost always more women signed up than men. Usually women’s waiting lists are longer and they are filled up first than men’s places. Is this a trend, or do women want to meditate more, or why is this?

Men are working…
Because men find it gay.
Well, a lot of them do.
And they’re at work so their women can afford meditation.
They heard there was a place with lots of quiet and silence, so they all went there, so that they could be heard.
mayb they hav a lot more hormones to control.
This can relate back to discrimination in our society.
Whether you accept it or not, we still believe there are certain things women should/shouldn’t do and the same thing goes for men.
I think men are often ignorant of their feelings and own well-being, this could be because of the way they were brought up in a world of only “tough” men.
You never really know- everyone is different in their own way.
Good Luck,

It would appear men in Western (or at least North American) cultures don’t seem to value introspection as much as women.
Compassion is another attribute that in general, women seem to value cultivating more so than men.
The above generalizations seem to fit the evolutionary model that suggests males tend to respond to stress by “fight or flight”, as opposed to female response of “tend and befriend.”
Point being, introspection and compassion are more useful for “tend and befriend” than for “fight or flight”.

women are more sensitive. they are emotional and as a feminine instinct they seek love, care, attention which they get rarely or not at all..so they are hungry.there hunger for love, compassion make them better meditators than men.west is going so fast that hardly there is time to go deeper in search of love within.thus meditation works as a healing for wounded soul.love, sw. maa
because you feel the effects of meditation much less when you are hectic, future focused and overworked. Which is basically the state of most men in western societies.
In such a desensitized state men resort to violent movies, depressants like alcohol and other relatively unhealthy measures to get their emotions flowing again.
men are more dense than women
and are less able to tune into
the sensitive realms
men are more aggressive by nature
and are afraid to expose themselves
to deeper feelings that
women are more in touch with
in order for men to seek meditation they
need to raise themselves above the
animal level of fight and flight that
controls their emotions and sense of worth
women are also stronger than men in
the realm of love and love is the prime
state for those seeking to understand
the world beyond the gross level that makes
up the world of modern civilization
once men tune in to their female side they
really find that they are for the first time
men in the true sense of the word
until then they remain lost and uneasy
with the world and remain immature
